Description / Overweight Warning Notice
Overweight Warning Notice — Weight Compliance and Sponge Effect Analysis
The Overweight Warning Notice is issued when a bin's estimated or measured weight exceeds safe transport thresholds. In Ontario construction waste hauling, overweight loads create regulatory exposure under highway transport regulations and safety risks for carriers operating on the GTA road network.
The Digital Refinery calculates weight using the certified formula: Bin Volume (yards) × 0.7645 (m³ conversion) × 174 kg/m³ (wood waste density). For a standard 40-yard bin, the expected dry weight is approximately 5,320 kg. However, the sponge effect — where wood waste absorbs rainwater and increases in weight by 30-60% — frequently pushes loads above transport limits without any change in volume.
Each notice includes: calculated dry weight versus estimated wet weight, sponge effect moisture factor based on exposure duration and precipitation data, comparison against Ontario highway weight limits for the assigned vehicle class, carrier notification with adjusted routing if required, and recommendations for client-side tarping or covered storage to minimize moisture absorption.
The sponge effect is one of the most misunderstood variables in wood waste logistics. A 40-yard bin that weighs 5.3 tonnes dry can exceed 8 tonnes after extended rain exposure. This directly impacts transportation costs, CIRCIL Levy calculations (which are weight-based), and carrier safety compliance. The Overweight Warning Notice ensures these variables are documented and managed rather than discovered at the scale.
